Christopher’s Life Story Christopher Stephan Smith “Smitty” was born on August 27, 1960, to Walter Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth Marie Smith in Wilmington, Delaware. He went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. Christopher attended Wilmington Public Schools and graduated from Howard Career Center in 1978. While in high school he studied Small Engine Repair and was an honor roll student. After graduating from high school he joined the U.S. Air Force, graduating from Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, in 1979. In 1982, he married the love of his life Dalene Tolbert, whom he was married to for 39 years. From this union, a daughter was born, Lonja’ Dalene Smith. Lonja’ brought much joy to his life. While in the Air Force, he served in Korea and the Philippines. He also received his Associates Degree from Strayer University in 2010 in Acquisition and Contract Management. After completing six years of military service, he went to work as a civilian at Andrews Air Force Base in Prince Georges County, Maryland. He served as a Lead Worker Sheet Metal Mechanic, servicing the hangars and other areas of the base. During his career, he received several awards for his service to the U.S. Air Force, after working over 30 years at the Air Force Base, he retired. Christopher loved to fish and go crabbing. As a child he loved playing basketball and hanging out at the Neighborhood House. In addition, he loved all kinds of sports. Christopher was hard-working, a good provider, a gentleman, loving, respectful and kind, and doted on his family. Christopher was preceded in death by his parents Walter Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth Marie Smith; daughter Lonja’ Smith and sisters, Elizabeth M. Taylor (nee Smith) and Diane Smith. Christopher leaves to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted wife, Dalene; his sister Mary Kate Stephens (Ernest), Walter Smith (Gladiola), all of Wilmington, Delaware; Brothers-in-law, Ernest Tolbert (Mary), Newark, Delaware, Aaron Tolbert (Granzaline), New Castle, Delaware; Sister-in-law, Eileen Bovell, Wilmington, Delaware; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
