Joyce Mason

Joyce Lee Mason (Lewis) 76 years old of Dover, Delaware peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord on Friday, December 30, 2022. She was born in Coppersville Unionville, MD on December 4, 1946, to Preston Raikes and Louise Lewis. She is the third born of six children. She received her early education in the public schools of Easton, MD. In 1962 she married James E Mason Jr (pre-deceased), and they had three children together. Later in her life, she met her beloved partner Roy Davis. They shared two children. While raising her family she also obtained a certification as a medical assistant and phlebotomist. For much of her career, she worked in the Delaware State Prison System in their medical units impacting lives until she retired. The inmates affectionately called her Nurse Mason. Joyce Mason was a people’s person who loved caring for and mentoring people. She enjoyed cooking, singing, and dancing. She most loved being surrounded by family and friends. Her home was always open to others as a safe haven attributed to her nurturing spirit. No matter the time or occasion you could always count on her infectious laugh and lighthearted spirit to bring life to any party. She also had a big sense of humor and didn’t mind telling stories of experiences throughout her life. She also knew how to put you in your place if you got lost. She had a way of getting what she needed to say said. To know Joyce was to love Joyce and most have fond memories of her tight hugs and wet kisses. One of her favorite songs to sing and dance to was “This Girl is on Fire,” by Alicia Keys. That song embodied who she was. ON FIRE! Joyce also loved the Lord. Her beautiful songbird voice could always be heard in the church congregation singing along with the choir and praising God. She always referred to herself as a congregate singer. On the Sundays when she didn’t attend church you could still find her at home, in the spirit, playing her favorite gospel songs yelling “Hallelujah – Thank you Jesus!” as she danced around the house.” She also kept her bible at the foot of her bed that she loved to study from and make notes in. She really enjoyed learning more about the Lord. Joyce is survived by her siblings Joan Moxley, Rena Lewis, and Preston Lewis; Her children Anita Mason-Daniels (Abel), James E. Mason II, Anthony Mason (Frank), Keith Mason and Kevin Mason; Her 8 grandchildren Joy Minus (Travis), Kevin Mason Jr., Jasmine Mason, Keshaun Mason, Jakeila Mason, Sierra Cruz, James Mason III; 7 great grandchildren Amir Hite, Ariel Hite, Chloe Walton, Alexander Mullins Jr, Maison Donato, Brynx Mason-Hamilton, Denym Mason-Walker; two special aunts Thelma Lewis and Doris Russum; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family which are too many to name. She was preceded in death by her parents Preston Raikes and Loise Lewis, her brother James (Jimmy) Lewis, and her sister Ernestine Coronado. Her love, joy and laughter will be greatly missed by all.
